“The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and starting on the first one.” – Mark Twain
We have all heard this quote before, or something like it, haven’t we? The classic way to defeat procrastination is to just do something, anything, to get the process started. Once you start, it’s quite likely you will keep going!
That has been my experience with everything I have done with The Front Door Project since June 2014, and I’m still going strong. That doesn’t mean I don’t stumble, but I just keep plugging along, tackling things one by one. This advice really works although it’s deceptively simple.
I am going apply it again today to get my Christmas decorations put away. Start with one ornament…
The feature photo is of the stunning blue Wells-Thorn House in Historic Deerfield, MA. Built c. 1747, it has been blue since 1801, when lawyer Hezekiah Wright Strong used the expensive color to show his status in the community.

My name is Deb Cohen, and I am a lifelong resident of Connecticut, a lover of all things historic and New England, and a realtor who helps buyers and sellers achieve their real estate goals and dreams. When I’m not working, I enjoy life with my husband, our two adult children, and our two rescue pups. Renovating and decorating our historic home, dating to 1800, is another favorite pastime.
That is a great quote, one I try apply on a daily basis! By the way Deb, I’m sitting here on my sofa still looking at my twinkling tree!
Thanks Tina! By the way – I didn’t get my tree down yesterday after all. I did start putting some other things away but haven’t got to the tree yet!
Decorations have been put away for the year. I can’t say I ever thought about painting a house blue, but this one is quite handsome. 🙂
It jumps right out at you when you are walking by! Honestly I would never paint my house this color but given the history I love the blue on this house 🙂
I had to undress our tree before Epiphany this year. I wasn’t sure when the city would collect them, and I didn’t want it to sit on my curb until February’s heavy trash collection. Good thing, too — they picked it up Monday morning! lol
Too funny! Ours haven’t come yet – but they usually come twice. But it’s the worst if your tree gets covered with snow on the curb – it’s there until spring!
Good advice, now I just have to get back to taking photos and posting, despite the greyness of the weather.
I know this weather makes it easy to stay in bed! That’s my biggest challenge every day – getting out from under the warm covers.
