My son had an event in White Plains, NY last week, and so after dropping him
As I traveled a windy road through an otherwise ordinary neighborhood, I spied this unique structure out of the corner of my eye. I turned around and traveled down the long driveway to the tower. I felt like I was on the set of Game of Thrones, or was transported to the English countryside!
Turns out this medieval structure is nothing more than a very large water tower! Originally called the Grange Stovepipe, it was constructed in 1930 with a steel tank that holds 1.7 million gallons of water designed as a reserve for emergency situations or during high demand periods.
The tank is covered with a masonry structure modeled after the Martello Towers of England, which were small defensive forts built across Britain during the 19th century. The tower remains in continuous use today and was renamed the Arthur Boniface Water Tower in memory of Arthur Boniface who served the village from 1918 to 1943. It was also designated as an American Water Landmark in 1989 by the American Waterworks Association.

Hope you enjoyed that tidbit of history! Now here are a few things on my radar:
- Have you seen this incredible gymnastics performance by Katelyn Ohashi? It blew me away, and the smile on her face is just incredible! I also loved the medley of Jackson family songs, and how excited her teammates were during and after her performance.
- I have two children, a sophomore in college and a high school junior. As my kids get older, I am learning to step back more and let them figure out their way of doing things. It’s so hard though! This article really sums the feeling up well.
- My daughter purchased the sweetest Christmas gift for me! I graduated from William & Mary (Williamsburg, VA) and she is currently attending there. She purchased a necklace from this Etsy shop and had our graduation dates and the latitude/longitude of the campus stamped on the pendant. So thoughtful! There are many different designs available, and so many occasions it could be appropriate for. Valentine’s Day is coming up and it would make a great gift.
- Have you watched the Great British Baking Show? I’m obsessed! I can’t believe the talent of the contestants, and everyone on the show is so nice. No drama which is great for a change! Plus I have learned a thing or two (like parchment paper is a must when baking).
- What are you reading currently? I would love your recommendations in the comments below. I can wholeheartedly recommend the following two books that I have read recently: “A Place for Us” by Fatima Farheen Mirza and “The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry” by Gabrielle Zevin. Both were thought provoking in their own way.
- I made this Chocolate Kahlua Cake over the holidays and it was a big hit (with the adults!) Check out the recipe here. You’ll thank me later!
- Do you decorate for Valentine’s Day? Here are some pretty wreaths that are perfect for the holiday if you are tired of your winter decor.
- I came across this article in a Facebook group I belong to, and it struck a chord with me. As a woman and mother, I often feel that I bear the responsibility of remembering the million “little things” that have to be done in addition to basic everyday tasks. The article refers to this as “mental load” which is mental clutter. Do you have a running list in your head of all the little things that need to be done?
- The use of brass for fixtures and fittings is still a trend for 2019, but designers suggest a mix of 2-3 metallic finishes in a space. Here are some gorgeous brass decor items for the exterior of your home. It’s not too soon to think about a front door makeover for spring!
That wraps things up for now! What is on your radar these days?
