My Instagram followers swooned over this beauty in the West End Historic District in New Britain, CT. The dormers, the porch, the balcony, not to mention the gorgeous color palette – all to die for! Part of the fun for me is trying to determine the architectural style of the various homes that I see. Some of them are fairly obvious, but others are a challenge for me due to the mixture of elements (plus due to the fact that I am not an actual architect!) I bought a fantastic book which has become my architectural bible called “A Field Guide to American Houses” by Virginia Savage McAlester. It breaks the various architectural styles used in our country’s history down by chronological order and major architectural features. There are tons of drawings and photographs to aid in identification, too. So…what is my educated guess about this style? Based on the era built (late 1800’s-early 1900’s), centered gable, hipped roof, pedimented dormers, symmetry of the home…I say Colonial Revival. Or – we can just call it gorgeous and be done with it!
