Doormat. The word has a bit of a negative connotation, doesn’t it? No one wants to BE a doormat, which means that you allow others to walk all over you. And yet, a doormat is one of the most useful things for a home. We all need one to wipe our feet or to ensure our guests do the same.
In recent years doormats have moved from purely functional to FUNctional! There are so many cute and funny doormats on the market that can reflect the personality of the homeowner in some way, whether it be a lighthearted joke, reference to pop culture, or a sweet welcome.

For the Dog Lovers
The best thing about these doormats is that you can’t see them from the street. So you can add a little whimsy and charm without distracting from the rest of the gorgeous curb appeal you have happening. Just you and your guests get to enjoy (and of course, your dogs).
If You’re Feeling Sassy
How do you feel about people just popping by? I want to be someone who is always happy to answer the door, but the truth is I’m always too worried about how I look, or about how my house looks. Or I might be dashing off to an appointment soon.
If I do have to pop by someone’s house unannounced, I make sure it’s for a specific reason, like dropping something off. I say a quick hello and I’m off again! Unless it’s my parent’s house. Then I’m coming in and having a sandwich, and hanging out for a while. Sorry, Mom and Dad!
For the Nerd In All of Us
What are you nerdy about? We all have something we geek out about (don’t we?) I have always been a Star Wars fan, and it came out quite a bit when my son was little. He loved the franchise too and so we enjoyed bonding over it with his action figures and Lego sets. My fandom is in remission right now since he has outgrown it (but I know it will come back when he has a child!)
I am nerdy about many other things, but that’s for me to know and you to find out.
For Keeping it Real
So many of us love our electronics and social media, savor our coffee, shop at Target and Amazon Prime, plus relish in a little trash TV and Tito’s. We would do better to remember we are more the same than different, don’t you think?
For a Truly Sweet Welcome
I have also been noticing these cute and funny doormats layered over a colorful rug. Something woven with stripes or flowers would look so cute under these graphic mats. Just keep in mind where you plan to place them.
Practically speaking, these printed mats do a bit better in a covered location, like under a portico or on a porch. Keep that in mind, but then again many of these are very reasonably priced so switching it out on occasion could work, too.
Did you find a doormat that speaks to you? If not, I have rounded up some other cute and funny options on Etsy and Amazon. There are so many to choose from!

My name is Deb Cohen, and I am a lifelong resident of Connecticut, a lover of all things historic and New England, and a realtor who helps buyers and sellers achieve their real estate goals and dreams. When I’m not working, I enjoy life with my husband, our two adult children, and our two rescue pups. Renovating and decorating our historic home, dating to 1800, is another favorite pastime.
I used to have one that said ‘your knock will be answered in the order in which it was received’. 🙂
Haha! I love that. Perfect 🙂
