While visiting The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill a few weeks ago, I left the hotel early in the morning to catch a glimpse of the surrounding area. I was treated to one of the prettiest neighborhoods I have seen in a while.
These particular homes were all in the Franklin-Rosemary Historic District which received its designation in 1976. Due to its proximity to campus, many professors and university presidents have called the neighborhood home.
With the variety of architecture, mature shade trees, stone walls, wrought iron fences, and spring gardens in bloom, it’s not hard to see why so many have chosen to live there. Southerners just have a way of making their homes feel warm and welcoming…take a peek at these photos and I’m sure you’ll agree!
Which is your favorite and why? Is there a particular area of the country you find most welcoming? I’m a New Englander at heart but I have to say there is nothing like a Southern front porch with rocking chairs and a swing!

My name is Deb Cohen, and I am a lifelong resident of Connecticut, a lover of all things historic and New England, and a realtor who helps buyers and sellers achieve their real estate goals and dreams. When I’m not working, I enjoy life with my husband, our two adult children, and our two rescue pups. Renovating and decorating our historic home, dating to 1800, is another favorite pastime.
The south is stunning, especially when spring has sprung! It is hard to pick a favorite in this group. Of course, the first one, with the yellow home blooming right out of the lush gardens is stellar. I was also struck by the simplicity and charm of the little one with the lavender azaleas. Thanks for sharing your morning stroll!
Thanks Valorie! I saw so many charming homes on my trip! I have to say I agree with you on your two choices – both of those struck me as well with their simple charm!!
Gorgeous pictures! Especially love the ones with dappled sunlight!
Thanks, Susie!!
Great walk-about! I love the red brick house with its great lawn, and what look like a sun room on either side of the house with decks on top. I love the front door portico, and all those windows with shutters.
Such a classic beauty!! Thanks, Deborah!
They’re all great, but I love the white house with the wide porch, rock path, and wildflowers 🙂 That’s my kind of house! 🙂
Yes!!! So warm and welcoming…and cozy!
I like the little home with the screened-in porch the best. It looks like a good place to sit and be welcome.
Isn’t it so cute? I think that might be my favorite also. Simple and charming.
The first one is my favorite because of the plantings. But, I must admit that once you said ‘Chapel Hill, North Carolina,’ all I could think about was really good basketball. 🙂
Excellent point, Judy!! They sure do have some good basketball at UNC!
