This little home just oozes charm. The texture of the brick, the mossy green patina and even the house number: 8 1/2! There are lots of “half” addresses in Charleston, many times to represent the smaller structures that are behind other homes or on small side streets or alleyways. What was this tiny home long ago? Perhaps it was a kitchen house? A kitchen house was a smaller building behind the main home that (you guessed it!) housed the kitchen. It was separate because of risk of fire to the main home. The theory according to a tour we took is that much of Charleston has small little alleyways connected all over the city because of these little kitchen houses as the house help had to be able to access the neighbors. Today, these little structures that have stood the test of time have been converted into residences, apartments and even little shops. Next time we visit I might consider renting one!
My name is Deb Cohen, and I am a lifelong resident of Connecticut, a lover of all things historic and New England, and a realtor who helps buyers and sellers achieve their real estate goals and dreams. When I’m not working, I enjoy life with my husband, our two adult children, and our two rescue pups. Renovating and decorating our historic home, dating to 1800, is another favorite pastime.
Charleston is so high on my bucket list it has to be seen within the next 12 months. 🙂
I started really thinking about it maybe 8 months ago or so – once I had it in my head that I needed to go I couldn’t wait! I want to go back – five days wasn’t enough!!
